What are EU Missions?
EU Missions are a novelty of the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme for the years 2021-2027. EU Missions are a new way to bring concrete solutions to some of our greatest challenges by putting research and innovation into a new role, combined with new forms of governance and collaboration, as well as by engaging citizens. What is the EU Mission "Restore our Ocean and Waters"?
Mission Ocean aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through research and innovation, citizen engagement and blue investments. The Mission’s new approach will address the ocean and waters as one and play a key role in achieving climate neutrality and restoring nature.
SeaClear2.0 is among the cross-cutting projects supporting this objective. Check out our sister projects under the BlueMissionMed.

Sister Projects

BlueMissionMed
The BlueMissionMed Coordination and Support Action (CSA) designs, structures and supports a multi-actor ecosystem able to offer to all Mediterranean countries, regions and stakeholders the knowledge and tools to address the Mission “Restore Our Oceans and Waters by 2030” objective 2 “Prevent and eliminate pollution of our ocean, seas and waters”.

REMEDIES
REMEDIES aims to restore our seas and rivers through deploying (micro)plastic litter valorisation and prevention pathways. Project activities will revolve around monitoring and detection, collection and valorisation, and prevention and reuse of plastic waste.

iMERMAID
iMERMAID will build an evidence-based multidimensional framework that will guide policymaking and transform societal perceptions to reduce CoEC usage, emissions, and pollution. Furthermore, next generation sensor and remediation solutions will be developed to monitor and remove prioritized chemicals from its source while reducing upstream pollution.

RHE-MEDiation
RHE-MEDiation aims to provide low-energy, high circularity chemical pollution remediation technology. This is to be integrated within water/wastewater treatment systems to identify and measure chemical substances in land and marine waters. The data collected will be shared with the EC EMODnet platform so as to contribute to the Digital Twin of the Ocean.
Join the Mission Charter
The Charter of the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters 2030” calls for joining efforts to achieve the three objectives of the Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030 to:
- Protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity, in line with the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030
- Prevent and eliminate pollution of our ocean, seas and waters, in line with the EU Action Plan Towards Zero Pollution for Air, Water and Soil
- Make the sustainable blue economy carbon-neutral and circular, in line with the proposed European Climate Law and the holistic vision enshrined in the Sustainable Blue Economy Strategy
To reach these objectives the Mission is also putting in place two enablers:
- Digital Ocean and Water Knowledge System
- Public mobilisation and engagement
This Charter is non-binding and open to any public or private interested parties. You can contribute by pledging actions to co-design, propose and implement policies, programmes, projects or initiatives that will contribute to the restoration of our ocean and waters.
